Running is one of the most fundamental parts of the human species, as it is one of the survival traits of our ancestors. It is great for one’s health, and useful in certain situations, it’s no surprise that countless people around the world still run. There are two running sports that are seen throughout the world; cross country and most notably, track and field.
Track and field is a diverse sport that focuses on high-intensity running and throwing. It is a great opportunity for those who enjoy running, or want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. The sport can be split into track events and field events.
Track events focus on sprinting, with different distances, depending on the event. Short distance events consist of 100, 200 and 400 meters, up to one lap around a traditional track. Runners in shorter events would need explosive power to dash onwards once the race starts. Long distance events on the other hand, can go from 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. During long events, runners would focus on a fast pace, but be able to maintain that pace for longer distances, rather than using all the energy in a short distance event.
While field events do not require sprinting on a track, they still maintain strenuous use of the legs and arms. Events like long jump and high jump focus on takeoff, approach and landing form, which are crucial to maximize performance in competitions. Arm-based events like discus and shot-put require good arm-strength to throw heavy projectiles over long distances.
Every so often during a traditional high school track season, there will be track meets, where teams from different schools compete to score points. Events last all day long, where athletes participate in one or more events that fit their interest, or what their skill is best with. This can not only be a great opportunity to show some competition, but have fun and meet new people along the way.
If one is interested in joining track and field, it’s important to know what they are interested in, what they are capable of, and above all, that they should condition themselves before the season starts. With conditioning, it gives the body hands-on experience, giving the athlete more confidence on what to expect in everyday practice, whilst preventing the body from being too fatigued.
Additionally, an athlete would need proper gear to carry during practice and meets. It’s important to always stay hydrated by drinking ⅓ of an athlete’s body weight everyday. Thus, carrying some spare water bottles would be ideal during long, exhausting days. Spare socks and clothes would be wise during rainy weather or intensive workouts, where soaked clothes would be unpleasant.
Correct footwear is crucial in this sport, ensuring comfort and performance. for the athlete’s feet. One should have a pair of light running shoes, with good cushioning to reduce foot pain. Furthermore, one should invest in a pair of spikes, depending on their events, allowing for solid grip and stability when in action.
To conclude, track and field can be an amazing opportunity to connect with new people, indulge in one’s passion for running or to challenge their limits. With good gear, preparation and an open mindset, there is no doubt the sport can leave countless memories.
