Artist Tate McRae, from Calgary, Canada, broke the internet in 2020 with her single, “you broke me first,“ which to this day has over 1.6 billion streams, and she released her second EP featuring that song in 2021. She quickly became a famous star and caught the attention of the media and fans worldwide. In 2022, McRae released her first studio album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, which contains no features. After multiple more hit singles that have reached over 1.6 billion streams as well, in 2023, she released her second album, THINK LATER, also with no features. A few months later she released her first single since the release of her second album, “It’s ok I’m ok,“ which quickly gained the attention of her fans and millions around the world.
On February 21, 2025, Tate McRae released her third studio album, So Close to What. The album has 15 tracks, spanning 43 minutes long on the standard version, with features from artists Flo Milli and The Kid Laroi. In the deluxe version of her album, there is an extra song, “Siren Sounds (bonus),“ making the deluxe album 16 songs and 46 minutes long. So Close to What is a powerful, emotional album full of lyrics about love and betrayal, along with just the feelings one experiences as they grow up.
The tracks “Miss possessive,” “It’s ok I’m ok,” “Like I do,” “bloodonmyhands,” and “No I’m not in love” are energetic tracks, yet full of sass and the feeling of knowing self-worth. The album‘s leading song, “Miss Possessive,” has an audio clip of Sydney Sweeney in the intro and is about keeping your eyes off someone else’s man and knowing one’s boundaries. “It’s ok I’m ok,“ the 11th track, is an uptempo hit, where McRae sings about if you can take her man, you can have him. McRae‘s 12th song, „No, I’m Not in Love,“ lyricizes about the misunderstanding of her being in love in a catchy, upbeat tempo. “Like I Do,“ her tenth song, is a more mellow song about mistrust and confusion. Tate McRae‘s collaboration with Flo Milli on “bloodonmyhands“ brings a bit of rap into her album to talk about boys playing games with her heart.
More lustful songs like “Dear God,“2 Hands,“ “Purple Lace Bra,“ “Sports Car,“ and „Revolving Door“ add an extra kick to her new album as well. Packed with lyrics about physical touch and desire, these songs take the label ‘love songs’ to another level. Her songs more directed at a healthier love, honesty, and communication, like “Signs,“ “I Know Love,“ “Means I Care,“ and “Greenlight, are sweet yet moving, truly showcasing her emotion and vulnerability through thoughtful lyrics.
Her final song on the regular version of her album, and the 15th song on the deluxe, “Nostalgia,“ is a slower, heartfelt song about growing up and seeing the world in a new point of view. McRae‘s bonus song on her deluxe album, “Siren Sounds (Bonus),“ adds an extra touch to an already complete album. With her vocals and a late-night-drive type of feel, “Siren Sounds (Bonus)“ is everything and more than what a fan could have asked for.
