Formula 1 returned to the Las Vegas Strip on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024. The Las Vegas Grand Prix blends world-class motorsport with the glitz and glamor only Vegas can deliver. This marks the second such race since the Las Vegas Grand Prix was added back to the calendar. Last year’s race ended in Max Verstappen gaining his eighteenth win of that season, contributing to a historical season where he ended up winning 19 out of 22 of the races, and with both Red Bull drivers miles ahead of the rest. Red Bull won the constructors championship comfortably.
But things are a little bit different this time around, with Verstappen not dominating as much as he did last year and Mclaren’s Lando Norris battling him for the drivers championship. Las Vegas is an interesting circuit because of its high-speed straights and tight corners. It is also long for a street circuit, stretching over 3.8 miles through and around the Las Vegas strip. The length, along with its complex layout, makes it challenging for drivers, who will have to balance top speed with tight cornering. Unlike most street circuits, the Las Vegas Grand Prix offers a particularly unique view. The iconic backdrop of the Strip with neon lights, towering hotels and bustling crowds ensures that the race is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the action on track. The circuit travels through some of Vegas’ most iconic attractions.
“It’s crazy that they are just going to race in the street like that,” FHS sophomore Isaac Digilio said. “I’ve been down the strip a few times and I’ve never thought about how racing could look. I’m sure it will be amazing and I can’t wait to watch.”
With Formula 1’s heavy investment into more U.S-oriented races and events, the Las Vegas Grand Prix will not only be a great race for motorsports fans but also an introduction to many who are looking to get into motorsports.
“I’ve only ever heard of F1 but I’ve never had the time to look into it,” FHS sophomore Hazel Neustaetter said. “I imagine it will look great with all the lights and it’s so cool that it’s here in the U.S.”
Neustaetter’s excitement is common amongst fans of all ages and experience levels. This year’s race has a lot at stake. Verstappen, while still leading the Drivers’ Championship, faces increased competition from Norris, who has found his rhythm in recent months. Norris has been consistently improving, and many experts believe he has what it takes to challenge Verstappen’s dominance in the sport. The Las Vegas Grand Prix could play a pivotal role in deciding the championship, adding even more intrigue to an already exciting season.
