In August 2025, the Fremont mural on the large gym facing Sunnyvale-Saratoga was painted over and replaced with a capital F and raised metal lettering with the words “Fremont High School established 1923”. The old mural, featuring an orange firebird and flames on top of grey text, was painted after FHS’s mascot was changed from the Indians to the Firebirds, during the 1996-97 school year. The mural was designed by then FHS Assistant Principal Bob Grover and a group of students, and was the first representation of the Firebird as FHS’s mascot, according to the FHS website. The previous mural featured an arrow with an F engraved on the arrowhead.
The metal letters were chosen because they are less costly than painting the letters, despite taking longer to produce, FHS principal Brian Emmert mentioned.
“So it will look different, but we think it’ll still look really nice once it’s all done,” Emmert said.
Another major change to the school’s branding came to the athletics department during the 2024-25 school year. It featured a new website to host all FHS athletics information in one place, rather than on different pages of the FHS school website. The new website can be found at fremonthsathletics.org.
“[The new website] was a lot more organized,” FHS sophomore Natalie Kwan said. “On the Fremont website, it’s very hard to find things.”
Additionally, the website’s update has made it easier for parents and companies to support the FHS athletics program. Instead of relying on checks, there are pages for direct donations via credit or debit card on the athletics website.
The website also features a storefront in collaboration with the distributor BSN Sports, one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of athletic gear for all levels of school sports. The storefront features sporting apparel from brands such as Nike, Lululemon and Adidas.
FHS’s deal with BSN means that going forward, most athletics uniforms will be manufactured by Nike.
“So I’ll do football this spring,” McCune said. “We’ll do a whole blackout football uniform this spring based on Stanford’s blackout uniform, which is gonna be dope.”
FHS athletics reuses uniforms year over year. However, uniforms still need to be replaced periodically as they wear out with use. “There’s plenty of our teams kind of going out and playing West Catholic League teams in mismatched uniforms and [the other leagues] got the best of the best,” McCune said. “That makes me mad. So that’s really what I’m attacking.”
Thus far, girls volleyball, field hockey, boys basketball and boys volleyball have been replaced with the new Nike jerseys. Girls tennis has also been replaced, but through a different brand due to time constraints.
The new uniforms, merchandise and athletics gear all feature new logos. The logos were designed by BSN as a part of their deal with FHS athletics. The new logos are available as PNG files on the athletics website, for use in social, digital and print media. The key reason for this was consistency across FHS athletics, McCune said.
“Essentially, the brand guide piece is just for athletics, and it’s just saying, ‘Stop using random birds. You want to use a bird, here’s a bird,’” McCune said.
