When students of FHS decided to group together to start their own girl’s Field Hockey team, it was as a means of adding to the school’s sports success. After several discussions with school officials, the team was officially formed and had its debut back in 2021. As the seasons have progressed, so has the capability of the team, allowing them to face even fiercer teams, both in their league and outside of it. The Field Hockey team lies within the De Anza League in the Central Coast Section. This year’s games have proven to be a success through the eyes of many. Highlights so far include the team’s first game and victory of the season against a non-league opponent, Salinas High School, which concluded in a score of 9-0. Shortly following this success, they continued to prove themselves against a familiar competitor, Homestead High School.
“Homestead really hyped me up because it was one of the beginning games and that really hyped me up for the season,” FHS varsity player Nicole Huynh said. “In my freshman year, [head coach] Jordan, she recruited me because I was in her PE class and I was like, ‘you know I’ll try it out’ because I wanted to do a sport and I started in my sophomore year and it was just really fun and I love all the girls on the team.”
FHS Field Hockey has been growing since 2021 and continues to welcome players who are willing to make a mark on and off the field.
“I started field hockey in my freshman year, when the field hockey program was just beginning,” FHS varsity player and team captain Geneva Alexander said. “I played soccer before that and I learned about field hockey, now I’m in my fourth year and I love it.”
Sports teams are built on the foundation of trust and teamwork, which the team has proven to possess. As they progress through the season, the team hopes to accomplish even greater things, with a League Championship on their mind, pushing their motivation to grow even higher.
“I think we’ve grown a lot in our overall improvement as a team, [in] our meetings after games we talk about what we need to improve on and what we’ve been doing well. Seeing my teammates grow has been very cool,” Alexander said. “We just talk and make sure to communicate with each other about what we could do better.”
Communication is key with the FHS team and doing so shows a positive result in their team’s ability to produce wins no matter the competitor they are facing. The team has put up some promising scores, including a blowout win of 6-0 against Lynbrook High School on Friday, September 15. The team continues to be on fire in these early stages of the season and prove themselves to be a force of nature as the season continues.
