It is evident that celebrities are idolized by the public, with people immersing themselves into their lives, forgetting that these celebrities are regular human beings. But it is not just their fan bases that think so highly of them — many of them think too highly of themselves. As a result of these out-of-hand egos, they seem arrogant, out of touch and difficult to work with. There are many instances of egotistical celebrities who seem to believe they are better than everyone else, often treating employees with disrespect. This can damage relationships with fans, coworkers and the media. It may also lead to a lack of accountability when things go wrong.
One of the most controversial and egotistic celebrities nowadays is Chappel Roan. Roan is a singer-songwriter known for her femme-positive pop music. While she seems very focused on making music and passionate about performing it, she has said things that have heavily discouraged the public from liking her.
“I don’t like fans coming up to me because I feel unsafe,” Roan said in a recent interview.
She also added that she is likely to reject photos with fans. While this is all okay in theory, she has been rudely letting down fans, making it seem like she does not care about them. While not wanting to take photos is understandable, it is not okay to speak and act rudely to your supporters. Roan has expressed a strong desire to live a “normal life,” free from constant fan attention and the pressure to comment on political issues. While Roan has the option of avoiding political talk in interviews, public attention is an inevitable part of fame. Ultimately, since Roan chooses to embrace fame, she must also recognize the responsibility that comes with how she treats the fans who helped her rise.
Another example is JoJo Siwa, who was a child star that danced on the reality TV show “Dance Moms.” But more importantly, she is known for her controversial music. She has always been a controversial figure on the internet for her behavior and occurrences with others, but recently she stated that she started a new genre of music called “gay pop.” However, this has been a genre for quite a long time. She claims her music gave other gay pop artists a “bigger home than what they have had before.” These self-centered claims directly show that celebrities are getting out of hand. Some of them think that since they have fame, they can influence people’s opinions.
American rapper and producer Kanye West has always had a big ego and claims to be “The best artist in the world” and a “genius.” Although West is a great artist with many hit songs, his recent behaviour provides a reason to nullify these claims about himself. Although he has always been a controversial figure, since his divorce from Kim Kardashian and his marriage to Bianca Cencori, his controversiality has increased. He has said awful things during the past few years about claiming to be a Nazi, supporting slavery and disrespecting the LGBTQ+ community.
In today’s society, celebrities are often idolized to the point where fans forget they are regular people deserving of consequences, often leading to stars developing inflated egos and acting arrogantly or out of touch. This behavior often damages their relationships with fans and the media. Artists like Roan, Siwa and West highlight how a celebrity’s ego can overshadow talent and discourage the very audiences that helped them rise to fame.
