As summer rolls around, many feel the pressure to have a perfect “summer bod.” With the free time that the summer vacation brings, some choose to tackle their long-term goals of getting fit. However, trying something new cxan always feel scary. The confusing world of protein shakes, hundreds of exercises, dieting and gym-specific attire might seem overwhelming. Luckily, there are many gym veterans to advise the newbies.
Jorden Sigura, a sophomore and FHS weight training class student, has general workout advice for new gym-goers. To someone who wants to prevent weight gain over the summer while still building muscle, he recommends a diet of fewer calories, carbohydrates and fat. A daily protein intake of 1.5 grams per pound of body weight is what he has had the best results with. As for how often to workout, Sigura opts for at least four times a week.
Though summer opens up more time for workouts, many people travel, which can make it difficult to implement a rigorous workout schedule. Sigura shared how he stays fit on vacation.
“If there’s a gym there, then I’ll go there, and if not I’ll do whatever I can even if it’s just simple bodyweight exercises like pushups,” Sigura said.
Without gym access, Sigura does 20-30 minutes of cardio to maintain consistency. He stresses that consistency and discipline regarding fitness and dieting will lead to progress.
However, during the summer when it seems like everyone else is going out with their friends and eating junk food, sticking to a diet can seem impossible. FHS senior Elizabeth Barajas explains how her gym habits changed when she was on a diet.
“It was more of a difference that I saw which affected the times that I would go to the gym,” Barajas said. “I’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna go every day just because I see a difference in my progress.’”
She explained that dieting motivated her to go to the gym, making the whole process of staying fit easier. Her main motivator is the way working out and eating well makes her feel.
“If it makes you feel good about yourself, do it,” Barajas said. “That’ll give you the motivation to do it.”
Despite how daunting going to the gym for the first time can feel, both Barajas and Sigura assure that it is an accepting community.
“It was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life,” Sigura said. “If anyone wants to start working out, but they’re scared, just be assured that there’s nothing to be afraid of. As long as you’re committed and dedicated to staying consistent, then you’re gonna see results and everything will be fine.”
