Veganism is when someone does not use or consume products that were delivered from an animal. The term “vegan” originated in 1944, but the concept of avoiding meat has been popular in India and in Mediterranean societies far before then. The concept was born in 500 B.C.E, courtesy of Pythagoras of Samos, the renowned Greek philosopher and mathematician. Veganism has recently gained relevance due to its known health benefits and through pop culture. Famous vegans include Billie Eilish, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and many more. Though many people prefer being vegan because of the fight against animal cruelty and in an effort to better the environment, there are still negative aspects to veganism.
To start, vegan dishes lack food options. Especially while socializing, it is easy to feel like a burden to your friends when going out to eat because you have specific food preferences. Vegans often have to spend more time cooking their own food due to the scarce amount of food options.
Though there are studies that show that a vegan diet can be beneficial for health, meat is still a more accessible source of protein. According to the National Library of Medicine, vegans consume the least amount of protein compared to other food groups, and vegans also consume fewer crucial amino acids than non-vegans. A protein deficiency can cause a weakened immune system, bone and muscle loss, and skin and hair changes. A lack of protein can also lead to stunted growth in adolescents. The consumption of meat is very important to human health.
Another challenge that the vegan diet faces is the lack of the B12 vitamin. Vitamin B12 keeps your blood cells healthy and prevents megaloblastic anemia which causes people to be tired and weak. Vitamin B12 rich foods include meat and eggs which is cut off from a vegan diet. A gripe some may have against vegans is the feeling of moral superiority of vegans over meat eaters, a vegan’s actions of not eating meat can make other people feel that they have higher moral values than them because they are against harming animals.
In conclusion, veganism has been heavily advocated over the years by public figures and the proven health benefits from it, but it can be socially difficult to adjust to vegans, especially in barbecues or when eating out. It can also cause a lack of vitamins and protein due to certain vitamins being in meat and eggs.
