Between November and April, high school students across the globe apply for summer programs, specifically ones that would help them stand out amongst their peers during their college application process. Ranging from STEM research programs to business workshops, there are many programs and opportunities that colleges host, giving high school students a chance to further explore their interests during the summertime.
Being exposed to different fields and interests is one of the most overlooked benefits of these programs as they push students out of their comfort zones. Throughout the school year, high school students grow accustomed to their friend groups, class schedules and their teachers. Attending these programs gives them a chance to meet and work with a new group of students from diverse backgrounds. This exposure to new environments and fields can help them start to develop their interests as they continue their high school journey.
For students who have a desired field of interest, these summer programs let students further explore those fields. During their time in high school, many students take the fixed amount of required courses in order to graduate. This schedule only leaves room for students to pursue their interests through their electives, except many schools do not offer a huge selection. Summer programs can fill in this gap. Being in a focused setting for just a few weeks in the summer with other students who have the same interests can boost your learning and allow you to catch a glimpse on what your future could hold.
“I’m excited to dive a little bit deeper,” FHS freshman Charlotte Painter said. “I feel like at Fremont, it’s hard to really go in depth into things that I want to go into depth about. It feels like I’m not as challenged [at Fremont], so I’m definitely excited to be around people that have the same mindset as me.”
A huge concern circling these programs is their financial costs, and their accessibility for those who are international or far away from the program. For low-income families, it is hard to pay for the expenses required for the program. Application fees range from $50-100, and the expenses of housing and dining can increase the costs even further. Fortunately, in recent years many colleges have become more aware of this issue, and they want to ensure that their program is accessible to those who need it, thus offering financial aid and scholarships.
Although there are many concerns on whether the content of the program is worth its high cost, there are still many benefits from the application process and living in the dormitories. Applying to summer programs gives students exposure to what it is like to apply to college. Many programs require a personal statement and three to five supplement essays along with an extracurricular list. By living in the dormitories, students learn how to live independently. From getting their own meals to doing their laundry, students get a small taste of what their life will be like in a few years if they decide to attend college. This is a huge concern to many parents as they believe that their kids are not ready for such a big responsibility, but many programs do have both an online and hybrid version.
While many people question the accessibility and value of summer programs, it is important to recognize the valuable resources and experiences they offer. Many high school students enroll in these programs as they think it will enhance their college applications. However, rather than spending all their time trying to pick up a collection of things to impress college admission officers, they should spend the weeks exploring new interests and taking full advantage of the opportunities that are provided, such as networking and creating new memories.
