Dreamworks Animation released “Trolls” six years ago on Nov. 4, 2016, starring Anna Kendrick as Poppy and Justin Timberlake as Branch, and its sequel “Trolls World Tour” was released three years ago on Mar. 12, 2020. Trolls 3 was announced on Nov. 22, 2021, just about two years ago, and students have been waiting for the new movie to release trailers and come out in theaters. There have been many rumors online about the third “Trolls” movie, some about characters Poppy and Branch getting married, kissing and having children. Some of the theories stuck even after the trailer was released.
“Trolls Band Together” was released in theaters on Nov. 17, 2023, and some students went to see the movie over their Thanksgiving break or during the last weeks of November.
According to IMDb, Poppy finds out that when Branch was younger, he and his brothers Floyd, John Dory, Spruce and Clay were in a boy band called BroZone. When Branch’s brother, Floyd, is kidnapped, Branch and Poppy must go on a journey to reunite the other brothers and save Floyd.
“If you don’t know anything about the other Trolls movies, you probably could watch it just fine,” FHS math teacher Jacey Scholten said. “I don’t know their names very well, but there’s a couple of characters from the original that I wish were in it.”
The absence of some of the original characters was a little sad for some viewers. But there are also fun things about the new movie, such as new characters, new settings, and new songs.
“There’s also some jokes about 90s boy bands, and I grew up with those boy bands so I thought that was pretty cool,” Scholten said.
One of the things that excited older viewers was the NSYNC reunion for the movie. Members of 90s band NSYNC played their song “Better Place” for the movie’s soundtrack.
“I found that interesting. My parents loved that,” FHS freshman Romi Sadowsky said.
The absence of some of the characters from the first and second movies also created an irrelevant plot between the second and third movies. And some think that “Trolls World Tour” and the “Trolls Band Together” are not related in any way.
“I think it was kind of unnecessary honestly, just like the entire thing.” Sadowsky said.
“Trolls Band Together,” rated PG, is considered a kids movie, so it is unclear if the movie is appealing to high schoolers or older audiences.
“I watched it because I have an eight-year-old, so I don’t know if I would go see the movie by myself,” Scholten said.
Sadowsky went to the movies with her parents and younger siblings, and Scholten went to the movies with her son. But not all students have younger siblings, so should they go to see the movie anyway?
“I’d recommend it to maybe their younger siblings. But I wouldn’t recommend it to high schoolers,” Sadowsky said.
