In recent years, digital comic franchises, such as Webtoons, have become increasingly popular. The online platform Webtoon launched in 2005 and now has thousands of free comics in many different genres, such as fantasy, action, romance, comedy, sci-fi and horror. Their unique art and stories make them interesting and enjoyable for readers.
“I read a lot of different webtoons,” FHS freshman Ankita Canakoti said. “I’ve touched on a little horror [and] I’ve touched on a little action, but my favorites would be slice of life and a little romance.”
Webtoons have a format of panels that are usually in a vertical order. Their format uses scrolling, creating a unique experience for readers. For example, in horror webtoons, the scrolling feature creates suspense as the reader goes from panel to panel. They are usually drawn in color and have a variety of art styles. Some Webtoons’ art is similar to cartoons, using simple colors, backgrounds and characters, while others may have more details and are drawn in a more dramatic style. The color palettes and designs match with the story’s genre and tone, which allows the plot and the character’s emotions to be conveyed better.
“One of my favorite parts about Webtoons is that the art style evolves as you go through the story,” Canakoti said. “So you can see not just the growth of the characters, but the growth of the art as well as the artist.”
The Webtoon catalog includes a plethora of stories with creative plots, a format that is easy to read and colorful illustrations and art styles.
“They’re really fun and a good way to pass the time, because most of them really improve your creativity and sometimes, for the historical ones, you have to use your critical thinking to figure out what’s really going on,” FHS freshman Harshitha Vishnu said.
Some of the most popular webtoon stories include “The Mafia Nanny,” “The Remarried Empress,” “Down To Earth,” “School Bus Graveyard” and “Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story,” as can be seen on Webtoon’s “trending” list.
Overall, Webtoons are a great way to read unique stories online and can help readers to experience something new. Whether a fan of traditional comics or cartoons, Webtoons are a good place to explore.
