Have you ever decided to brighten up your day by engaging in a fun but unnecessary activity? If so, the internet might describe your behaviour as whimsical. The daily stress of modern life has caused people to search for little ways to enjoy life more. This is referred to as finding ways to add whimsy into their lives, a trend popularized across social media platforms.
The word whimsy refers to sudden notions of fancy, originating from the 1520s term whimwham, originally meaning a plaything or toy. Associated with quaintness and eccentricity, whimsical behavior can range from dressing differently than what is conventional to thanking candles before blowing them out (something a TikTok commenter professed to doing). Ultimately, labelling something as whimsical requires it to have little valuable meaning but to be offbeat and joyful.
In recent months, the idea of whimsy has gained popularity online, with many people sharing how they choose to stay whimsical in comment sections and through videos, while also emphasizing the importance of this behavior for keeping life enjoyable in difficult times. There are also videos suggesting people do certain things to be more whimsical.
FHS junior Meaghan Evans considers herself to be avidly whimsical, despite not having seen a lot of these videos. She shared her opinion on such trends.
“I think it’s really exciting to see how people integrate their own whimsy,” Evans said. “[But] I don’t think [these videos embody whimsy truly] because I think you need to decide whimsy for yourself. Because whimsy is when you’re mysterious and you go with what you want to do, but if you follow the trend, you aren’t [being whimsical].”
While social media can introduce the idea of whimsy, it can also limit it. When actions become trends, they risk losing the spontaneity that defines them. What begins as a personal moment of joy can quickly turn into something performed for an audience rather than something that is experienced for its own sake. This shift can make whimsical actions feel less genuine and more like participation in a larger online pattern.
For students balancing school, extracurriculars and responsibilities, small moments of individuality can be especially valuable. Acting on a random idea, no matter how insignificant it may seem, can provide a break from routine and add a sense of unpredictability to an otherwise structured day. These moments do not need to be shared or validated by others to have meaning.
Ultimately, the appeal of whimsy lies in its simplicity. Whether it comes from a quiet habit or an unexpected choice, its purpose is to break routine and create a moment of lightheartedness. In a fast-paced world, even a small, unnecessary action can serve as a reminder that not everything has to be productive to make it worthwhile, as long as this comes from a place of authenticity and not conformity.
