Pros and cons of being a twin

Almost every person in FHS has siblings. Whether a younger brother or an older sister, the majority of people grow up with siblings. The different relationships between siblings are something that nearly every person can talk about. However, being a twin is far less common; in fact, the topic is rarely discussed.

Siblings have many different age gaps, which is significant as age gaps are often the cause of siblings’ distancing. Because of their age differences, many siblings are at different stages in their lives and have varying levels of maturity, which changes their relations with each other.

Being a twin is completely different. Having siblings the same age as one has many pros and cons. For example, having a family member who goes through similar experiences as one can be very helpful when dealing with various challenges; as a twin myself, growing up with someone by my side was very helpful. I never had to deal with being alone on the first day of school or trying to find someone to sit with during lunch. Having a twin to rely on always, albeit comforting, can also be detrimental to one’s becoming self-sufficient. This is not something that has a big impact on many people, but it is a crucial factor of being a twin.

Given the academically pivotal stage we all are in currently, I am certainly fortunate to have a twin to learn with. This is a big advantage because if the average person without a twin had a problem with their schoolwork, for instance, they would have to reach out to friends, teachers or maybe even a tutor for assistance. Though with twins, since they are usually studying the same materials, they can ask each other for assistance.

Every twin, I presume would agree that there is a lot of comparison between each other. I mostly see it with my family, but the comparison still happens very often with others. This comparison creates pressure on oneself to meet specific standards or accomplish goals to the same degree as one’s twin. Undoubtedly, this is a difficult aspect of having a twin, but eventually, one becomes used to it.

Overall, the benefits of being a twin overcome the disadvantages. Even though there are hurdles like taking a longer time to discover ones individual identity, the person live with a built-in best friend who will help them go through everything and be the person who understands them the most.
