The big fear of finding the perfect roommate

As senior year comes to an end, as it does every year for the graduating class, the biggest step that seniors look forward to is college and their life’s future endeavors. For many students entering college there are many difficulties that go along with it. For a majority of the incoming college freshman, there is an intense pressure to find the “best” roommate, which to them, may make or break their freshman experience.

Many colleges have Instagram accounts, run by current students, where incoming students can post “about me” pages about themselves and some of their interests. Recently, many FHS students have used this platform to find potential roommates

“For me, it was a bit scary going into it because there aren’t many people going to Oregon that I know,” FHS senior Barak Shahar said. “But after I posted my bio on some commitment pages, I was able to talk to some people and eventually found a roommate.”

Being able to connect with another person without meeting them in-person is one of the criteria that most students look for in their potential roommates. Identifying similar interests, such as sports and activities, pushes people even more towards each other.

“I’m excited to find someone who I can spend time with and go through the process of settling in and adjusting with,” FHS senior Mandi Jean said. “I think it’ll be really helpful to have a friend who is also experiencing everything for the first time so you don’t feel alone.”

Jean will be attending Cal State Monterey Bay.

However, along with the excitement of finding a roommate and meeting new people, most seniors find themselves in nervous attitudes over the accommodation that comes with being in a brand new setting.

“I’m super nervous,” Jean said. “Choosing who you’re going to live with for a whole year is a big decision and there’s a lot of pressure around making the right decision. I feel like a big factor in getting along with people is just their energy and mannerisms and there’s no way to see that or get a real sense of their personality before you have to make that decision.”

Finding a roommate is one of the most thrilling yet anxious feelings that many teenagers feel, especially with so many other life changes happening simultaneously. Despite all the anxious anticipation teens face regarding their roommate, college and the idea of making the best social decisions is just another step in their journey and will take shape over time.
