Alexis Parker is an FHS English teacher who teaches American Literature and Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum. She is also the advisor for BSU (Black Student Union). She has been teaching for two years at FHS and makes her classes fun, relaxed and chill instead of stressful.
“I try to keep a balance between learning something new that’s difficult without it being so difficult that they want to give up,” Parker said. “I try my best to make things very approachable for students, especially the kind of surroundings as their own life.”
“I’m the advisor for BSU, which brings me a lot of joy,” Parker said. “We meet African American students every Friday at lunch, and it lets me connect to students on a different cultural level.”
The club meets every Friday, talking about different cultures and events. With Ms. Parker as their advisor, they have increased their visibility on campus.
FHS junior and American Literature student Ava Macatangay described Parker as a supportive teacher who is available when students want advice on plans for the future. When students do not know the definition of a word, she explains it in easier terms using examples.
“I’m never afraid to ask questions,” Macatangay said. “It’s always okay to ask for help. I like the learning environment and it’s very comfortable.”
FHS junior and American Literature student Daysha Walker said that Parker gives great advice and is a person she can easily talk to and feel comfortable around.
“She told me, ‘Don’t listen to what other people say to be just you,’” Walker said. “She’s honestly, like a teacher friend, like she listens to her students and really, like, I don’t have to explain like, she’s just there for her students.”
Beyond her involvement with BSU, many students, both current and former, also visit her classroom to talk, hang out and feel connected. A lot of students stop by her class to get snacks and have conversations with her, and she even keeps a small store in her classroom to donate to the BSU club.
Students consistently feel supported and understood by her. She offers thoughtful guidance, supports students during difficult moments, and approaches everyone with kindness and approachability. Her commitment to helping students and fostering a welcoming community reflects the positive and inclusive culture of FHS.
