The 2006 hit drama-comedy “The Devil Wears Prada” finally has a sequel, and one no one ever thought was going to happen. On May 1, 2026, the movie was released in theaters and had already surpassed the original in box office sales, within its first two weekends.
Making a sequel to a movie released 20 years ago is a major risk. The actors change, and so do fan bases. Movies that used to be a hit can easily fade into the obscurity on streaming platforms. However, “The Devil Wears Prada” is not one of these movies.
The main cast for the original movie is returned, including icons such as Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. The sequel is once again set in New York City, surrounding the office at Runway, a fading fashion magazine.
“The first one was basically just working in an office, and then how [Andy] was surviving and what her life would be in the fashion world,” FHS junior Miranda Nelson said. “The second [movie] was a lot more of a storyline.”
Hathaway is reprising her role as the main character Andrea Sachs, who after quitting her job at Runway in 2006, is now a journalist. In the first film Andrea, or Andy, turns over her entire life to be Miranda Priestly’s assistant, ruining her friendships and relationships. Her initial goal was to become a journalist, and eventually that goal leads back to Runway.
Blunt returns as fashion enthusiast Emily, who has also gone her separate ways with Runway and Streep’s character, Editor-in-Chief of Runway, Miranda Priestly. Emily now has a high position at Dior, while Miranda still inhabits the very same office.
Tucci’s character remains he was last seen 20 years ago, still working for Miranda. After all this time, the characters find themselves back together for a reunion to save Runway from a crumbling industry. The plot really takes a modern turn as the magazine struggles to find their footing and make their presence known in the online world.
“I thought it was really good to see how people in the fashion industry are having to react now, in modern days, especially with AI and then different stipulations nowadays,” Nelson said.
Throughout the film, there are numerous references to the original movie, which make the movie so nostalgic. A lot of music is similar and there are some fashion references scattered across the film. As a movie centered around the fashion industry, vintage and new fashion plays a big role in the characters’ lives.
“For the first movie, all of Andy’s outfits were so fire,” FHS junior Lynette Lopez said. “So what I really am expecting is that they give her a lot of really good costumes, and not just trying to make it look cool, but it’s actually cool and it fits her personality.”
Along with returning music, the soundtrack included a new sound. Lady Gaga and Doechii came together to create “RUNWAY,” with Lady Gaga also releasing “Glamourous Life” and “Shape of a Woman.” The rising star Raye got a moment with her song “Worth it” played. Even Laufey’s “Mr. Eclectic” was thrown in. And of course, being brought from the original is “Vogue” by Madonna.
There are so many things to look forward to in this movie, whether you have a special connection to “The Devil Wears Prada” or not. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is currently in theaters and will be released to Disney+ later in 2026.
