Seeing a movie for the first time can be a really special experience. Whether the moment is special because of who you saw it with, how you were feeling before or how it then made you feel, everyone has a takeaway from each movie. And whether watching in a giant theater, at home on a couch or on the go on a small phone screen, everyone shows up to see these works of art.
Each year, hundreds of movies come out, even if they are not on the big screen. Independent films usually do not play in theaters and certain streaming platforms like Netflix and Tubi skip theatrical releases to promote their services. For example, a book-adaptation of Emily Henry’s “People We Meet on Vacation” came out on Netflix in January 2026.
2026 is also a big year for sequels and franchise additions. “Scream 7” was released Feb. 27 in theaters, joining a franchise that first started in 1996. “The Devil Wears Prada 2” will be in theaters on May 2, picking up 20 years after the original movie. Along with those movies, the highly anticipated “Toy Story 5” will no doubt be a popular summer blockbuster. More franchises and universes like Marvel, Super Mario, Star Wars, Scary Movie, DC and The Hunger Games will also be adding movies to their lists.
This year’s lineup showcases so many different actors, however, four of them are a constant recurrence this movie season. These actors are Anne Hathaway, McKenna Grace, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. Many other actors will be appearing in two movies, especially cast members of Avengers: Doomsday, but these four actors are in at least three movies this year alone. Anne Hathaway is leading the industry this year as she is set to appear in five movies in 2026. Hathaway is reprising her role as Andi Sachs in “Devil Wears Prada 2,” and playing Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, in “The Odyssey,” the titular character in “Mother Mary,” the lead role in “Flowervale Street” and Verity Crawford in “Verity.” A leading lady, Hathaway has movies scheduled from April to October.
Zendaya is also having a busy year, with four movies set to release, along with another season of “Euphoria.” She is playing two returning characters this year: MJ in the fourth Spider-Man movie and Chani in the third and final “Dune” movie. Along with well-known characters, she will also be starring in “The Odyssey” alongside Hathaway, Pattinson and her Spider-Man co-star, Tom Holland.
“The Drama” is being released April 3, starring both Zendaya and Pattinson. Pattinson will also be joining her in “Dune: Part Three.” Pattinson will not be in any movies this year without his co-star Zendaya and will be appearing in three films in 2026.
Lastly, McKenna Grace is appearing in four movies this year. She will be joining The Hunger Games and Scream franchises, and reprising her voice-acting role as Skye in the third PAW Patrol movie. Grace will also be in the movie “Slanted,” a horror-comedy.
Movies like “The Odyssey” and “Avengers: Doomsday” will include some of the most popular actors and actresses of the time. “The Odyssey” is being directed by Christopher Nolan, who also directed “Oppenheimer,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy and “Interstellar.” The newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will include characters from traditional Marvel movies, “X-Men” and “The Fantastic Four.” Actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh and Pedro Pascal all together on the big screen for the first time.
Theaters also often bring back past movies for a limited time, either for anniversaries or to promote an upcoming movie. “Avengers: Endgame,” the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, will be returning to theaters in September to promote the next Avengers movie, and the first four Hunger Games movies will be released in early March to get fans ready for “Sunrise on the Reaping.”
Book adaptations or sequels, famous actors or newcomers, horror or romance — every movie has its place in the theater. Movies provide happiness and comfort for millions of people, and some of these life-changing movies might just be coming out soon. Movies and studios depend on the viewers and fans to keep the movie magic alive, and this year’s movie lineup sure is magical.
