Starting in the summer of 2024, the Gerald W. Ferguson Field House began construction. Over the last two years, the workers designed and built the approximately 21,000 square foot, one-story and about 35 foot tall field house. The field house held its grand opening on March 27, 2026, at 4 p.m.
The field house features a gym similar to the space of the large gym, a lobby area, a robotics room, a new weight room, a new training room, storage spaces and large unisex bathrooms.
The construction of the field house is one of many construction projects that FHS has implemented in recent years: the renovations of the football, soccer and baseball fields, which were all completed in the fall of 2024 while the pool house was repaired a while back. All of these renovations mainly impacted sports and their scheduling for practices.
Completed in October 2025, the wrestling team converted the small gym into their own practice space before the development of the field house.
“The wrestling team’s space had been torn down when construction on the field house had started,” FHS Athletic Director and wrestling coach Daniel McCune said. “They had been practicing in the cafeteria [and] there’s been a trickle-down effect of construction ever since June of 2025.”
Other sports and their schedules have been impacted as well, such as basketball, badminton and boys’ volleyball. By only having the large gym to practice in, the large gym became inefficient to use as a practice room. With the new facility, these teams will have more access and room to hold practices.
“They closed down the small gym before they made the field house and made it a wrestling gym so we had really bad practice times,” FHS junior and varsity volleyball player Rishabh Jaiganesh said.
Similarly, the boys’ basketball team was unable to fully practice due to the construction of the field house. The team rented a church down the street as a replacement facility.
The FHS Badminton team began using the building on March 23, 2026, but construction workers continued to work on the facility before its final product was completed on March 30, 2026.
The field house’s purpose is mainly intended for athletic and club use such as practices; however, other groups are able to use the field house during school hours.
“[The field house] won’t be open in the sense of unsupervised access, but P.E.will access it during the day,” McCune said. “I’m sure clubs will access it during lunch and before and after school, and our athletics department will definitely be accessing it after school.”
With this facility, students and athletes will be able to practice efficiently and have better practice times compared to using facilities like the large gym, small gym or the cafeteria, since each room is designed for different sports or different usage. The facility allows flexibility and reliability across all sports teams using the field house.
