Opening with a haunting D.I.Y. piano tape recording, Tame Impala’s new album “Deadbeat” immediately sets a mysterious but also hauntingly familiar mood before shifting to a dance experimental sound on the album’s opening track “My Old Ways.” Founded in 2007, alternative band Tame Impala started off as just a project from artist Kevin Parker’s home musical experimentation. Currently sitting at No. 98 most popular spot in the world on Spotify, Tame Impala has come a long way.
Known for hits like “The Less I Know The Better” and “Borderline,” both of which have amassed billions of streams across music platforms, Tame Impala is continuing their streak of popularity with their new album, “Deadbeat,” which was released Oct. 17, 2025.
Tame Impala’s mesmerizing melodies have intrigued FHS Junior Rowen Pascual. Finding the artist through the song “The Less I Know The Better” and later “Let It Happen,” Pascual described what makes Tame Impala so unique.
“I really like the vibe of it,” Pascual said. “It definitely gives off that nighttime drive vibe.”
FHS student teacher Dylan D’Amico, a long-time fan of the band, shares what he thinks makes Tame Impala so fascinating.
“It’s kind of psychedelic in essence, kind of in a weird way … you go in a trance,” D’Amico said.
D’Amico has been a fan of the band for a long time, with his favorite album being “Borderline.”
Three singles promoting the album were released early: “Loser”, “End Of Summer” and “Dracula.” With its 80s hip-hop-techno-esque 808s and synths, “Dracula” in particular has garnered an unusual amount of success for the band. It debuted at the No. 55 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this October, making it Tame Impala’s first ever song to reach the top 100.
On the track “Loser,” a heavy bassline combined with Kevin Parker’s compressed gritty yet soft voice encapsulates the sound of the band’s dreamlike sonic landscapes. The music video accompanying the track, released Sept. 3, 2025, features popular actor Joe Keery, known for portraying the character Steve from Stranger Things as well as being the frontman for popular band Djo. The video portrays a slick conman who gets dumped by his girlfriend, echoing the lyrics in the song. “I’m a loser, babe. Do you wanna tear my heart out?” Parker sings.
Tame Impala has proven that they are more relevant than ever, cementing their place in modern mainstream music with “Deadbeat.”
