The evolution of the famous “Edgar” haircut

The Edgar haircut has been popular since the 2020s. This haircut is typically worn by teenagers with different variations and styles. The hairstyle is common in high schools today in many different styles.

One reason for its popularity may be because of how practical it is to style and how well it stays in place. This haircut appears to be a variation of the bowl cut around the top of the head with a variety of styles down the sides like a fade, a taper, a mullet and many other styles.

The famous haircut was named after Edgar Martinez, a former Major League Baseball player. In 2019, a fan asked Anthony Reyes, a barber from Puerto Rico, to engrave Martinez’s face on the back of his head. Reyes posted a video of this haircut to Instagram and it went viral, even being reshared by the MLB Puerto Rico account. According to the Texas State Historical Association, this haircut even dates back to the 1500 to 1700s, similar to how Jumano Indians would cut their hair. The Edgar haircut may seem like a recent style, but there have been many variations of it in the past. Spock, in “Star Trek,” rocked this style, as well as Lloyd Christmas, played by Jim Carrey in “Dumb and Dumber” and Moe Howard in “The Three Stooges.”

Though the Edgar haircut is popular today, many people still view it negatively and see it as a childish haircut. FHS freshman Aditya Bansal expresses his similar views on the haircut.

“I learned about it in eighth grade through social media,” Bansal said. “I think it’s stupid and no one will respect you if you get it.”

The Edgar haircut has received a lot of criticism. However, not all FHS students feel the same about the haircut.

FHS freshman Abhi Suresh said that the haircut would be acceptable “if it were a bit more trimmed and more sleek.”

Though it may seem like the majority of people are not fond of this haircut, it is still worn by many. The versatility of the Edgar haircut with different fades, styles and convenience keep the haircut popular.
