The FHS winter sports season is in full swing, and athletes across campus are pushing themselves to compete at high levels. Among the most physically demanding sports offered at FHS is boys’ soccer, a game that requires endurance, technical precision and constant communication. Every player must develop sharp field awareness and quick decision-making to be successful on the pitch. For those who aspire to compete on a varsity level, the expectations are even higher. One of the FHS soccer team’s most experienced athletes and its current captain, senior Adrian Lau has long been a cornerstone of the varsity team. Beginning soccer at the age of six, Lau grew up with the sport.
“I just love soccer,” Lau said. “I started when I was little, and I’ve stuck with it ever since.”
Over the years, Lau has steadily worked his way through the sport, eventually earning the role of varsity captain. To him, leadership is defined by consistency and communication.
“Leadership means communication with teammates on and off the field,” Lau said. “It’s about making sure everyone’s on the same page.”
Lau approaches every match with relentless energy, a quality that has shaped his reputation among teammates and coaches. However, he also maintains a light demeanor both on and off the pitch, joking that he runs around like a headless chicken.
But beneath the humor lies a serious passion. Lau’s constant movement and drive help anchor the team, especially during high-pressure plays, fast transitions and critical defensive moments. To understand Lau’s full impact, one can look at how others describe him. Lau’s teammate and FHS senior Raphael Castel Morano has watched Lau develop over the years and sees him as a central figure in the program’s culture.
“Adrian makes sure everyone is thinking straight and on top of their game,” Castel Morano said.
Through Lau’s high school career, he has had many moments of success. However, one memory stands out above the rest, scoring a game-winning goal.
“That’s something I’ll never forget,” Lau said.
What truly sets Lau apart, however, extends beyond athletic ability. His perseverance and steady mindset make him a reliable role model for both varsity and JV players. According to Castel Morano, Lau’s influence reaches far beyond the varsity roster.
“I see JV players looking up to him every day,” Castel Morano said. “He really inspires everyone in the program.”
Soccer is a sport that demands physical endurance and mental resilience. Matches can swing in a matter of seconds, requiring players to think quickly, adapt constantly and never give up. For many athletes, the learning curve can be steep, but the sport’s high-energy gameplay and tightly bonded team culture make it worth the effort. Lau believes soccer is a sport anyone can grow to love, regardless of skill level. For new or younger players, Lau offers a message rooted in his own experience.
“Don’t give up on yourself even if you’re playing poor,” Lau said. “Just keep going.”
